DWC Construction is Meeting
Infrastructure Challenges as Nashville Grows

Melissa Smithson

Over our 75-year history at DWC Construction, we’ve seen a lot of change in Nashville and that trend isn’t slowing any time soon. Nashville was booming before the COVID-19 pandemic and it has returned stronger than ever. According to Nashville’s Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ralph Schulz, the city’s growth rate was about three times the national average before the COVID-19 pandemic, and it continues to increase. Real estate software company Stessa’s 2021 report showed that Nashville’s metro area, with a population of nearly 2 million, was the #1 metro area for economic growth in 2021, and poised for continued growth throughout 2022. We are seeing over 130 monthly building permits per each 100,000 residents, increasing employment rates, and booming residential home sales.

Larger Firms Moving to Nashville

Like everyone else, we’ve been following the news about larger businesses moving to Nashville. There’s a lot of talk about companies moving from states that have created unfavorable conditions for businesses and their employees to states with a more business-friendly environment and better quality of life for their families. Texas usually comes up first in those conversations, but Tennessee is the second-most popular corporate relocation destination nationwide, and moving up fast.

In addition to Amazon, Oracle and Mitsubishi are bringing corporate offices and headquarters to Nashville. Kaiser Aluminum, which makes aerospace and custom automotive aluminum parts, is moving from Southern California to Franklin, Tennessee. All together, these new corporate headquarters and facilities are expected to add tens of thousands of jobs and a lot of economic opportunity.

A recent report from Stanford University showed that between 2018 and mid-2021, 25 California-headquartered companies moved from the Golden State to Tennessee, and two-thirds them have settled in the Nashville area. There are a lot of reasons for these moves, including the favorable business climate, but quality of life for employees, a strong labor market, and reasonable business regulations top the list.
